Asian Quake Disaster

As I'm sure you have heard, tragedy continues in Asia, as the tsunami death toll is expected to easily top 100,000. Please be encouraged to donate anything you can ... every little bit helps.

I'm glad to see the Canadian govenment increased our support from an embarrasing $4-million to something a little more meaningful ($40-mil).

However, I still can't understand why they don't send the Disaster Assistance Response Team (DART). What exactly are they waiting for?!?! The government says it's not a "short-term response mechanism"...almost 120,000 are dead? This obviously isn't a short term crisis.

i think they mean it is not deployed as an immideate short-term solution, giving them a bigger window to deploy the team. i understand its the price tag of deploying it, something in the minimum of $15 million automatically. either way, it should without hesitation be deployed. and while we're at it, lets curb global warming and the inevitable raising sea levels that come along with it. too bad we can't visibly see all the deaths of environmental degradation - it would spur change light nothing else if we could. instead people die quiety in hospitals instead of publically in the media, preventing any action.

All right I'm done my donations. I gave to CARE Canada and also a smaller donation to the Canadian Red Cross. CARE really impressed me with what they're doing (I remember them from their work in Afghanistan). And if you read their financial report, they only spent 2.9% on management last year (including fund raising!), and they always keep it under 5%. Most charities are lucky to get it under 15%. If you're going to donate to CARE, go for the Tsunami fund IMHO. Any money that's left over will be moved to their more general emergency relief fund.

I also gave a small bit to the Red Cross because, you know, you never want to put all your eggs in one basket, and the Red Cross is always a pretty safe bet.

If you people reading this are anything like me, you likely won't end up paying much (or any) income tax anyway, but it's still a good idea to make your donation right away so they can date your tax receipt before 2005.

As for DART, it's not like this thing's going to be over in a week. Even if it takes them a while to get prepared and get over there, there will still be something for them to do when they get there. In other words, the government should be sending their asses over there RIGHT NOW.

I guess Bill Graham said yesterday that we're sending some DART people. In the CBC article they make it sound like some hodge-podge team with some DART leftovers thrown in. In the Calgary Herald article today it made it sound like it was a full-on DART team (albeit a small one). So I don't know what the story is. But at least a couple DARTers seem to be going.

Based on Mike's suggestion/research, I too donated to the CARE Tsunami fund.

Although, I didn't spread my eggs around, I say go for one basket and hope for the best! ha ha

There's a nice animated explanation of how the earthquake caused the tsunami here. (BBC News)

Looks like the United States has just upped the ante - it has increased its aid fund to $350M US, up tenfold.

Canada has now doubled its pledge to $80M. I'm actually surprised at the total the Japanese have commited towards relief.

This is a perfect example of why Canada should increase it's military spending. I've seen lots of footage of American ships serving in the affected areas, in particular at least one aircraft carrier is being used to produce clean drinking water, as well as ferry supplies (from it's helicopters). What can Canada contribute? Our 200 man DART team, which took over a week to deploy (rapid reponse my eye).
