The first time that using a nuclear blast to close the leaking oil well was suggested the idea was universally panned. Now that we're on day 30-something (or is it 40-something?), and all the conventional techniques have failed, maybe it is time to collapse the well with this approach.
What do we have to lose? How much worse could that be than waiting until August to plug this thing? Under-sea nuclear tests were pretty popular for a while, so it's not like this has never been done before. (And apparently our soviet-era friends have done this a number of times in the past.) I'm surprised this hasn't been suggested more (in fact, any idea to just block/destroy the well). The conspiracy theorist in me wonders if they aren't trying to save the well so the initial investment isn't lost.
