Halflife 2 is for Rubes
Rube Goldberg was an incredibly famous cartoonist, best known for his designs of overly complex machines to perform very simple tasks. I suppose it's a testament to the quality of Halflife 2's physics engine that people have built Goldberg machines with it.

Harper censors Canadian Media
Well, as if we're living in some kind of state where people are not capable of making their own judgements, Harper has decided that the Canadian media will not be allowed to cover the arrival of Canadian soldier at the air force base.

Here's the story

Now we can proudly admit to being more like the United States each and every day we're lucky enough to have this "man" as Prime Minister. I love living in a country where the PM tells us what we can and can't know.

Scott McNealy Stepping Down
After slowing driving Sun into the ground for the last 5 years, Scott McNealy has apparently decided it's someone eles' turn to try it. Why now?

Garbage Week
It's that time of year again...the time when the birds come back, the trees start to blossom, and the university students in London show just how wasteful they can be.

I just watched a guy drag some type of desk out to the dumpster behind this building, then destroy the desk (which prior to destruction seemed perfectly good) so he could fit it in the garbage. I wonder how big the garbage mountain will get this year?

We're the Walmart generation and this is what happens. It's cheaper and easier to replace a $50 piece of furniture than it is to move it. *sigh*

Native Protest
Nothing says "respect for Mother Nature" like a tire fire.

Two young men throw tires into a large fire blazing on the highway near the disputed land.

I need a fucking job.
Read the above.

Baby Holmes
Katie Holmes gave birth to the spawn of Tom Cruise today. No word from the BBC on whether or not she gave birth in total silence. It is also not yet clear if Tom ate the placenta or if he's saving it for later.

Not fit for execution? We can fix that.
There is something terribly, terribly wrong with this. A Texas judge has ordered that an inmate on death row be FORCED to take his meds so that he can be declared mentally fit for execution. Does anyone else find that a little disturbing?

Retrospect
I remember watching this as a child...but I can't remember what I thought when I watched it. Now, as a young adult, I'm left confused and scared. Who created this cartoon and what is it's purpose?

New TLD Highlights Bigger Problem
<rant>

It's time we replaced the current DNS system, or at least the way we (as end users) use domain names to find servers and services. The .eu domain has just opened up, and already there is tons of competition for the big domain names. In fact, there was a 4-week registration period in which companies could apply in advance to get their trademark.eu domains.

So who cares? Why do we need MORE top level domains when all the same people host the important part, the domain itself? (For example: google.com, google.net, google.eu, etc.) Seems silly to me.

Consider this: When was the last time you typed in www.somenewsite.com? Likely a long time ago. What you probably did was go to your favorite search engine and look up "somenewsite". Which leads to my point: Maybe we need something a little more robust than DNS to remember webpages.

A Daily WTF of Our Own
I found this on the biz.marketplace.web-design newsgroup today...I hope I never buy anything from this guy's website:

What I want to do is make a secure form to collect order info (including credit card details) and have that info emailed to my order processing company.

*shudders* For those who don't have many hit-points in the nerdly realm: Email is the LEAST secure way to transmit data, which totally eclipses this guy's problem of not having a secure website.

Death by Ugg
Thanks to my friend Emily (Brandeis student) for the story and for tracking down the picture.

A Brandeis student has been arrested for assaulting two police officers with a pair of ugg boots. I can only surmise that the only reason we haven't heard of drunken ugg boot rampages here in London is that they're so commonplace as to be considered not worthy of reporting.

Mailing myself
I woke up this morning to discover I had a new email:

I mean I WAS out drinking last night, but I didn't think I was drunk enough that I'd email myself. It is a totally surreal feeling to see your own name in your inbox.

Turns out it was some dude (perhaps a "bloke", I'm not sure) in the UK who has the same name as me, Googled himself, and decided to email me. I quote: "All the other mike Burrells out there seemed to be fairly dull too..." BOOYA, take THAT Alabama lawyer guy!@@!

Anyway, ya, no point to this post, I just thought it was cool. Anyone else have this happen?
