Who's up for a little phishing?

To my delight I received my first E-Filler phishing email today! The message looked like this (I put * in the e-mail addresses so those evil spam bots won't get me):
Subject: Important Notification
Sender: support@e-filler.ca (clearly someone in the support dept.)
Message:
Dear Valued Member,
According to our site policy you will have to confirm your account by the following link or else your account will be suspended within 24 hours for security reasons.
http://www.e-filler.ca/confirm.php?email=d*n@e-filler.ca
Thank you for your attention to this question. We apologize for any inconvenience.
Sincerely,E-filler Security Department Assistant.
The link pointed to: http://62.193.220.183/confirm.php?email=d*n@e-filler.ca which sadly was disabled by the time I got there...I wanted to see if they/he/she even ripped off the e-filler motif. Seems like a lot of effort just to break in and post something under my name...

I'll give a prize to the first attendee at wednesday pub night to tell me the code-word hidden a few levels deep in the following text segment. This is an individual assignment, don't share your work!
(I haven't yet found a prize, but there'll only be one, so get there early.)

Carpool Zone
Posted By: Dan

Carpool Zone offers a service that lets users search for one another based on travel patterns in an effort to encourage carpooling. But doesn't this leave the door wide open for abuse? For example, you could find out what time people are leaving for work (and on what day) before you go break into their houses...
Or what if the guy you carpool with has obnoxious B.O...how do you get out of travelling with him? That could be a seriously awkward social situation. Anyone had experience with a service like this? |

Totally Awsome or Totally Disgusting?

This evening as I approached my car I noticed something different about it. There was a cucumber on the roof that wasn't there the night before. It would seem that yesterday when I returned from grocery shopping the cucumber I bought fell out of the bag without me noticing. At some point another tenant in my building was kind enough to pick it up off the ground and place it on the roof of my car.
And now I have a conundrum: On the one hand it's a shame to waste food, on the other, I'm not sure it's a good idea to eat food that spent the night on the ground in a parking garage (my parking garage no less...though the cucumber is shrink-wrapped and appears to be in good condition, all things considered).

With a new crop of game consoles just around the corner, which would you buy and why?
Nintendo Revolution - Cool new controllers
Xbox 360 - Shiney new case
PS3 - I have no idea what PS3 brings to the table
I've never owned a console, but I'm starting to think about it... |

Google Ads is supposed to take content from the webpage you're looking at and supply an ad that's relevant, right? Well, I just got this one this morning. I...I don't want to think about it.

E-Filler Videos

Hey
We made some Jackass type videos a few years back and they were good. I cant even remember the name anymore, Idiot something. Anyway, I want Dan to post the vids on the site somehow and want to peer pressure him into it. So this is really just meant to spark some interest... even if it doesn't.

E-Filler sucks

There are some, not naming any names, who have talked of starting up e-fillersucks.ca as an alternative to E-Filler. Turns out Dan Siemon has his own vaguely blog kind of thing with comments and whatnot. It may not be e-fillersucks, but I think one thing we can all agree on is that it's much better than E-Filler. |

Another privacy breach at UWO

First the University decides to post people's SINs on a public website. Then they decide to leave NSERC rankings around in the open for anyone to stumble upon. Now they've decided that we should all be reading each other's mail.
Yes, that's right. I started up my e-mail client only to find that I had access to someone else's "Sent" folder. I get my mail via IMAP (through ITS, not through CSD). It would appear the IMAP server is having some "difficulties" if it's allowing me to see someone else's mail. I've sent an e-mail to operator@uwo.ca and I'll post any response I get here. In the mean time, I get to spend much of my evening moving and deleting all mail from my ITS account (what else can I do?).

Christmas Election
Posted By: Dan

There's been lots of noise in the news lately about the possibility of a Christmas election. The publicity for such an event is largely negative: "Canadian's don't want a Christmas election". I'm not sure what the fuss is about, quite frankly, I can see and upside! We'll all going to be at home or off work over the holidays anyway, people might actually take the time to research the various party platforms and no one will be too busy to vote. Plus, it'll give us something to watch on TV since regular programming goes on holidays too...
At the very least, an election/campaign throughout the Christmas season is no more inconvenient than any other time of year. |

Nature or Nurture?

We've all heard the stories of child prodigies entering university at extremly young ages. This story is no exception (borrowed from Slashdot): an 8-year old boy has been admitted to a Korean university...simply amazing right? Apparently he's finished grades 1-12 in 9 months or something like that. (Slightly related: Rumor has it there's a 12 or 14 year old in CS208 this year...that's a second year CS course)
Anyway, if children like these really are brilliant, it's a good demonstration of what the human mind is really capable of. But how can we (as a species) make the most of it? Are these children genetic flukes or is there a way to raise a brilliant child? If it's genetics, should parents be able to tinker with it? I'm not sure if you've heard, but there are trials underway in US where parents have been allowed to choose the gender of their unborn children. Clearly there are some ethical issues to deal with...and it will make a great premis for a sci-fi film: A war is brooding between the 'naturals' (people whose parents could afford the genetic enhancements) and the 'genetics' (modified people...like the food we eat)... |
