Software Bugs and your money

I'm sure many of you have already read about a software problem that caused CIBC to debit some customers twice the amount they requested. This comes only a few months after a different software problem hit the Royal Bank. I suspect this is going to become common place in the future. As we head into a paper-less society, what recourse/safty do you have? Can you trust the bank to catch and correct their errors? As a software developer, I can tell you with confidence that these software systems (used by banks and other large insititutions) are so large and complex that it's impossible to make them bug free. The only way for you to be sure what you have, is to keep track of it yourself. The simplest way I found is to just enter all my debit card transactions into this web application I wrote. After I enter the amount for my most recent transaction, if the balance on my debit reciept and the balance on Moneyman don't match, I know there's a problem. Take a look, you can create an account and use it for free. |

Google Bubble

Apparently some people think that Google is worth somewhere around $30 billion dollars. That would put it on par with companies like Sony (who produce tangible goods in more traditional markets). Folks, plug your ears because when that bubble pops, it's going to be loud. |

SOCAN (the Canadian version of the RIAA) is going after dentists who play music to their patients while they work on their teeth for royalties...I hope they're kidding. Exactly how much revenue could they possible exect to generate from this? |

X10 Ads

You know those wireless X10 cameras that they advertise with pop-up ads all other the place? (You'll know what I'm talking about when you see the ads...they're pretty sketchy.) Well, this guy has a pretty good breakdown on them and it gave me a few good laughs. It's pathetic how low the company who's selling these cameras will go...
And if that's not enough, here's a parody site of the real X10 webpage. |

Ken Jennings

Guess who beat the Jepordy record today? That's right! None other than the guy who knows everything... Ken Jennings!
An older photo: Ken after winning 1 million big ones.
I snagged this interesting point off Google Groups:
On his very first day, Ken had a small lead going into Final Jeopardy. The Final question was:
"She's the first female track & field athlete to win medals in 5 different events at a single Olympics."
If Ken hadn't questioned "Marion Jones" he would've finished dead last! This unstoppable phenom almost didn't get started! |

If you ever wondered how the graphics on your Xbox stack up to those on a PC, take a look these pictures below:

The screenshots are from Doom 3, and the scaling does them no justice. Click each image to view a larger version. |

New iPod Design
Posted By: Dan
|
Jul 18, 2004 - 4:17 PM
|
Well, I got sick of looking at all those South Park banners, so here's something different: Tommorow (Monday) Apple is supposed to announce their 'new' iPod design. The following image has been floating around the web, and is apparently a sneek peek at the new design.
The design looks the same as the old one...what gives Steve?
Update: And here's a link to the stuff just released by Apple. Looks like the new iPod has a longer battery life and costs $100 (USD) less than the older versions.
The also have this cool adapter that lets you connect your iPod to your BMW's stereo...the best part is that it uses the existing controls (such as those on the steering wheel) to control the iPod. How sweet is that? Too bad I don't own an iPod, or a BMW. |

Doom 3

It's finnally happened; Doom 3 has gone GOLD! What does that mean? It's means that both the game developer (ID software) and publisher (Activision) have agreed that the game is ready for production! You can pick up your copy of the most anticipated game since Quake 3 on August 5th.
There is still no demo. |

A new version of Urban Terror has been released. For those of you who don't know, Urban Terror is a total conversion for Quake III Arena (so basically, you need Q3A installed and working in order to get UT to work).
You'll need these files to play:
• Urban Terror 3.7
• Quake III Arena 1.32 Patch

NDP Not Listening to the Experts

KYOTO is Garabiche!!!
Maybe the NDP, especially Jack Layton, and the Liberals should listen to Canada's foremost environtmental experts before pushing for incredibly costly reform.
Layton's a HUGE POOCH, he personifies the whiney, underdog politician who is clogging our system with useless and wasteful legislative proposals.
Martin - Don't be "That Guy", and by "That Guy" I mean that guy who makes gigantic legislative mistakes because he doesn't have the balls to stand up and say "No, where not going to do that, because it's wasteful, unnecessary, and serves no current benefit to our taxpayers and citizens."
That is all |

Futurama
Posted By: Dan
|
Jul 07, 2004 - 12:14 PM
|
Now that summer's here and there's nothing new to watch on TV (ie. The Simpsons), I've become hooked on a show that I never watched before:
Futurama
Sadly, they not longer produce this gem, and there's just re-runs on...fortuatly for me, I haven't seen any episodes! Each one is jam packed with subtle jokes...I can see why it went off the air...it has more "nerd appeal" than "mainstream appeal".
Anyway, in short: Long Live Futurama! If you've never watched it, I suggest you give it a whirl...it'll ease your craving for new TV. |

Movie Industry
Posted By: Dan
|
Jul 06, 2004 - 5:25 PM

This was posted over on Slashdot and I thought I'd share:
The BBC is reporting that the movie industry, in yet another illustration of just how much damage the Internet is doing to the long-suffering members of the MPAA, has just endured a record breaking $1Billion dollar takings for the single month of June. Clearly there is a desperate need to tighten up copyright laws in the face of this huge mountain of cash that is literally being metaphorically syphoned into the studios' pockets. How will they survive? |

The Long Weekend

Well, the long weekend has come and gone. I myself just arrived home from a nice weekend at the cottage. There was beautiful weather and plenty of bugs. The rain held off until today for the (painfully long) ride home.
What did everyone else do with their time off? |
