No need for iTunes in Canada
Let the music flow! It's not agaist the law to share your files in Canada via Peer to Peer (P2P) networks. I'm not too sure about downloading, but uploading is apparently okay!

Brian, since you're the "law talking guy", do you have any comments on the matter?

How much does your prof make?
Well Western students, if you ever wondered how much your prof makes you might want to check out this link. If it's over $100,000/yr then their name and salary is on this list. I found 5-or-so of my profs, and I am surprised by at least 1 of them...

C and Xs
Pete,

Rumor has it, they are used in memory of Cecilia Zhang.

Dave.

X/C - Pete Clarke
What's the deal with people putting C's or X's in front of their MSN names. I have heard numerous stories, ranging from it being a show of Israeli solidarity to it being a joke to see how many people you can fool. What's the real story?

In my opinion anybody who participates in this ridiculous trend deserves a big "H" in front of their name.

You know what I'm talking about.

Spam Scam?
Today (for the second time) I recieved an e-mail from what appears to be HSBC, the Hong Kong Bank of Canada. The e-mail is as follows:

Subject: Official notice for all HSBC Business Banking Customers
As part of our continuing commitment to protect
your Business Banking Account and to reduce the
instance of fraud on our website, we are undertaking
a period review of our member accounts. You are requested
to visit our site by following the link given below. This
is required for us to continue to offer you a safe and risk
free environment to send and receive money online, and maintain
the HSBC Experience. You will be redirected to the HSBC home
page after verification. Thank you.
http://www.hsbc.com/hsbc/business_banking;action=verify;acct=business
Copyright hsbc.com, inc 2004. All rights reserved.

The funny thing is that I'm not an HSBC banking customer, let alone a business customer. Notice that the URL in the e-mail points to hsbc.com, but if you look up the Hong Kong Bank of Canada on Google, you'll find that their URL is hsbc.ca, notice the difference? .com <-> .ca

So, which site is legit? Are they both? The WHOIS database says that hsbc.com belongs to:
HSBC Holdings plc (HSBC5-DOM)
8 Canada Square
London e14 5hq
GB
Domain Name: HSBC.COM

And HSBC.ca belongs to:
Domain hsbc.ca
HSBC Capital Canada Inc.
1050 WEST BENDER Street
VANCOUVER BC V6C 3S7 Canada
Phone: +1 604-643-6693
Fax: +1 604-641-2922

So which one's the real bank? Is the the same company? Why would a legitimate bank send out such a sketchy e-mail? Check out both websites, they look very much the same.

If you have any ideas about what the origin of this e-mail is or what the situation with this/these bank(s) is, leave me a tip on the messageboard.

The Return of William Hung
Remember William Hung? If so, you might find this link amusing.

Also, if need to waste an afternoon or two, you should check out these 2 little gems:

Elevators
Begin Rant:

Okay, it's become obvious that there are quite a few people on this planet who do not understand how the elevator buttons work. If you're waiting for the elevator and you want to go down, press the lower of the two buttons. If you want to go up, press the higher of the two buttons. (The buttons are usually denoted with an up and down arrow respectivly.) DON'T PRESS BOTH! All this does it mean that you might get to ride the elevator in the wrong direction, and then stop again on your original floor AND it will annoy the other passengers on the elevator...ESPECIALLY if we have to make a needless stop. Also, pressing the button more than once, won't make it come faster.

End of Rant.

It's nice to see that they're celebrating my birthday this year with the release of a new movie, Soul Plane.

And here's one for Gord:

Chernobyl
You might find this site interesting. I guess you could call it a journal of a Russian woman's trip to Chernobyl and surrounding cities. It's an interesting an enlightening read.

The link was posted on Slashdot a while back, but the site has recently been expanded.

Twangers and Balls Cont'd
I did a little reconassance work on the "Twangers and Balls" issue. It turns out that the show in question ("Rainbow") was in fact a real British children's TV show back in the 70s - 80s.

There are a few urban legends surrounding what you've just watched. (If you haven't watched it yet, you can click the link posted by Brian in the previous news article, or click here for a larger version.)
• It's been reported that this was the pilot episode for the series, the idea was a gag children's show, but the producers who saw the pilot liked the idea for a serious program instead. This story is...FALSE
• That was a real episode for the show...of which the writers were fired shortly after. This story is...FALSE
• That episode was filmed for the BBC's (or whoever produced it) Christmas party. Apparently it was not uncommon for shows to try and out do each other for the most hilarious Christmas gag episode. But after a while things got out of hand, a few shows got leaked and then the "suits pulled the plug." This story is...The TRUTH at last!

And now you know the whole story.

Twangers and Balls
Hey,
So I sincerely hope that the following clip is a farce. But, for the small chance that it is actually real I will post it. Enjoy!

Hit Me With Your Best Shot
Let's just say, Pat Benetar had no idea how perfect her song would be for this little clip. Quite frankly this is the definition of smash and grab.

This guy has balls!

Roadmap to Peace?
Nothing says Roadmap to Peace like assassinating your enemies! Won't this make a martyer out of Sheik Ahmed Yassin?

How is peace ever going to be achieved if this tit-for-tat exchange continues?

Word of the Day
Today's word of the day is: forthwith.

Forthwith: Without delay or hesitation; with no time intervening; "he answered immediately"; "found an answer straightaway"; "an official accused of dishonesty should be suspended forthwith"; "Come here now!"

What else has been gained?
Dan,

Lets not loose sight of the business opportunities a free Iraq offers (Haliburton). What's our oil doing under their sand anyways?

More on Iraq...
Yesterday was the 1-year anniversary of the start of the war in Iraq...and of course George W. Bush was out to take advatage. I saw him on the news talking about how securing Iraq is essential to the war on terror. But as the French president said "There was no terror in Iraq before the war." So, the Iragi people WERE safe (not anymore) and the American people are no safer at home! Not to mention, there was also no ties found between Al-Qaeda and Sadam's regime (that one tie that was found by a Canadian journalist turned out to be fake)...so...to recap:
• No weapons of mass destruction
• No links with Al-Qaeda
• 500+ American lives lost
• Countless Iraqi civilan lives lost
What has been gained? Anything? Anyone? If you've got an idea, post it in the message board (no registration required).

Update: Oh yeah, thanks for reminding me about that Dave. George Bush was proud to announce that while Iraqi's don't have electricity or running/clean water, their oil production had beed restored to pre-war levels! Hooray!

FUD
The US ambassitor to Canada is saying that Canada isn't safe from terrorist attacks. Quite franky, I'm not so sure. We live in a country that's so laid back, the national headlines usually have to do with paying off debt and Don Cherry. I think Cellucci is simply trying to spead FUD (Fear, Uncertanty and Doubt) in Canada in an effort to gain support for the US "War on Terror."

Bling
Today we're getting a new $100 bill. Maybe our legal tender will become 'accepted tender' once again. (Have you tried to use a $50/$100 bill anywhere lately?)

Oh yeah, I forgot: Happy St. Patty's Day.

Matt and Trey
Hey,
So here is the deal. Matt Stone and Trey Parker, the creators of the hilarious cartoon South Park were asked by Shockwave or some internet flash media type company to create a flash animation cartoon for the website. From what i've been told, they were asked to do 30 episodes for the company.

However, the dynamic duo only created 2 episodes before the suits cancelled the series...

Below are links to those 2 episodes. PLEASE be forewarned, the below links are rather graphic and incredibly disgusting and definitely should not be viewed by any of the following:

Anyone under the age of 18
Anyone without the perverted mindset of an adolescent male
or
The parents of anyone who contributes to this site

Remember, I warned you...

Shocking
Well that settles it, I'm moving my PC into the bathroom.

War in Iraq
I was watching ABCNews this evening and I found it frustrating that the Bush administration is claiming that alot of progress has been made on improving Iraq's infrastructure since the end of the war. They neglected to compare to the state of things BEFORE the war.

I recently heard a speaker who had just returned from Iraq. Basically he said the only place where the electricy and water runs like it did before the war is in the US 'Green Zone'. This is the headquarters of the American military presence in Iraq and has nothing to do with the general population.

AND we're still waiting for those weapons of mass destruction to show up...

Intel to Change Naming Scheme
As if buying a new computer wasn't difficult enough. Intel is going to change the way they label things to make it 'easier' for you...the average consumer. Rather than brand their CPUs with simply a model name (Pentium/2/3/4) and MHz/GHz number they are going to add a 'performance index' to their processors, similar to what AMD has been doing for a while. The performance index will show how well the CPU performs overall. They will most likely just benchmark the CPUs to get a relative number. Which is funny, becuase they're going to need a to use a benchmark that shows Intel processors are faster than anything else (ie. PowerPC CPUs in the MAC G5, AMD CPUs, and a few more lesser known processors). Good luck since this is already a touchy and hotly contested area. You can read more about this here.

Also, Intel is going to start shipping their P4s with EM64T 'feature'. (Extended Memory 64-bit Technology or something like that) What this does is allow your computer to have a 64-bit address space (right now if you're using an Intel or compatable CPU you probably have a 32-bit address space). This means that your PC will be able to handle more than 4GBs of RAM...why should you care? You probably shouldn't for a few years. And remember, AMD has offered this in the AMD64/Opteron line of CPUs for a while now...

Now you're up to date.

Thinking About Doin' It?
Hey,
For those of you who aren't down with wearing your saftey gear when you lay pipe, maybe you should reconsider

Greetings from Oberlin
Hello from Oberlin, Ohio. I'm here for a few hours, then I'm heading back to the safe haven of Canada. What can I say? It's been a while since I travelled to the US, and the people are friendlier than I remember. The roads are a mess and the McDonald's are nicer. I guess it all balances out.

Update: Well, I'm back in London, Ontario now. It's good to be home. It should be noted that the border guy on the way there (the US customs agent) was a total ass (with his 500 trick questions), but the Candian fellow (on the way home) was really friendly.

Coup D'tat 2004
Please consider the following:
Aristide was democratically elected as president in 1990 but a year later was removed by a violent military coup...Many of the rebels and opposition forces who fought in this coup(Feb 28/2004) are themselves remnants of commandos and paramilitary forces who carried out the 1991 coup d'tat which successfully overthrew Aristide. That coup was lead by FRAPH, Front for the Advancement and Progress of Haiti, a CIA-supported paramilitary group charged for innumerable human right violations and extrajudicial killings.
But what benefit would their be for the U.S. to take over Haiti?
What is it that Haiti produces? Well, "the United States is the main commercial partner of Haiti. It accounts for about 60% of the flows of exports and imports. Primarily Haiti exports coffee, mangoes, sisal and essential oils..."
So? The world coffee industry is in crisis. The price that a farmer receives for his or her crop of coffee has almost halved in the last three years push[ing] prices down to a 30-year low. PBS even noticed
So?There are now initiatives for a market correction
So? People are blaming companies like KRAFT for underpaying.
Kraft is now part of Altria, the conglomerate that contains Kraft Foods, Miller Brewing, and Philip Morris.Who sell respectively Caffeine, Booze and Smokes.
So? With a market correction on the horizon, profit for the big coffee brands of Kraft(Altria): Kenco, Carte Noir and Maxwell House could be in jeopardy.
So? Maybe Altria wants to secure a cheap source of coffee.
But how could they do that? 1 2 3
Maybe by "convincing" the U.S. to install a government that favours cheap coffee into one of the biggest coffee producing nations in the world.
Wait a second! Haiti produces less that .1% of the world's coffee supply.
Not for long! That figure could change drasitically, some estimates indicate that 1000% growth is possible for Haitian coffee production."We have the potential to produce one and a half million bags of coffee and we only produce 200,000," specifies Mr. Fresnel Germain, Minister of Trade and Industry for Haiti? That would put Haiti somewhere in the top twenty coffee producing nations.
Interesting. Very Interesting.
Please Discuss in our Forum

But wait there's more....
It looks like Venezuela might encounter similar circumstances. But at least everyone knows that Venezuala would just be about oil.

Note: Altria is only used as an example. A multitude of other companies could be equally responsible or innocent.

Two Comments...
Hey
So I have 2 reasons for this post.

Reason Number One:

Keep an eye out for the upcoming E-Filler.ca t-shirt logo contest. More details to come, but for now, think about designing a new E-Filler logo for our upcoming t-shirts!

Reason Number Two:

Everyone likes hockey fights right?
Well check out these Lacrosse fights. The quality is poor in the video, but man this O'Brien kid is a tough son of a bitch!

Tropical Canada
It's come to my attention that there is some talk of inviting the Turks and Caicos islands to become a Canadian province. You can read a little background on the issue here. It sounds like a good idea to me. A nice (cheap?) sunny destination for those long winter months...all without leaving the comfort and security of Canada...except for the plane ride, which I guess technically you need to leave the country...but you know what I mean. What do we have to lose? The island only has 20,000 inhabitants...how much load could adding them to our social programs be? Not to mention the tax dollars that they'd bring in from the sweet sweet tourism.

There's an online petition I found here, go and sign it.

Make your thoughts on the issue heard in the message board.

Monday Report
I am now dumber having seen Brian's post.

In other news, if you haven't seen Monday Report before, I suggest you check it out. It's a pretty funny show on (yes, you guessed it) Monday nights at 8PM (CBC). At one point in this evening's show the host Rick Mercer was at Queen's University. It turns out they have a "Beer Appreciation Club" (among others)...why doesn't UWO have such a club? Why is our administration so anal? Pete...I'm lookin' in your direction for some answers.

Update: Ha ha ha! I just found this bit from an old episode of Monday Report. Check out the "Celebrity Winter Advice with Geddy Lee."

Bushisms
A post by Brian a few days back reminded me of a website I saw a while ago: Bushisms.com. It features some choice quotes from before and during George W. Bush's reign of t...I mean presidency. Check it out and judge for yourself.

Passionate Argument
So The Passion has been out for some time now and has generated record earnings. But whats the real story? Has anyone seen it that can offer a quality critique. Discuss it in the e-filler message board. Help me decide whether my Famous Players gift certificate should go to Mel, or Ben, Owen and Snoop for Starsky and Hutch. Maybe there's a compromise???

Revision:
We have a winner. I saw S & H today at 4:40PM. I'll take Owen as a smart-ass cop, over an italian guy who plays bad guys in B-movies as Christ anyday. Sorry Mel. Score one for the guy who brought you Bottlerocket.

SPAM is 10 years old
Wow, how the time flies. You can read more about it here.

I remember signing up for a hotmail account way back when...high school? Grade school? I can't remember...but it seems like eons ago. Anyway, the thing is, I never got spam there for the longest time. Then, it hit like a tidal wave. Now I get 10 or 20 spams per useful e-mail....time to change my address perhaps? Also, since I stopped using hotmail long ago, who has my account now? Someone e-mail him and ask.

P.S. I am aware of the 'coolness' of large fonts.

Word Meta-Data
As I'm sure many of you are unaware, all your Microsoft Word documents contain hidden information about changes you have made, who wrote the document, etc. If you submitting a resume to a potential employer in Word format, you might want to use this little utility, DocScrubber, to make sure it's "clean" before you give it away. Otherwise it's possible for someone else to see what previous versions of your resume (or your essay for school) looked like.

Note: I haven't tested this software myself.

French Toast
A group calling themselfs the 'AZF' has threatened to blow up some of France's railway lines if they are not paid 100 billion dollars...or maybe it was 4 million US and 1 million Euros...This sounds more like a James Bond movie rather than real life. A letter sent to the French government has already lead them to one explosive device.

You can read more about it here.

Steriods!
Hey,
So there has been lots of talk about steriods in Major League Baseball and in sports in general. Frankly, I have no idea where they are getting this idea...

Friends Don't Let Friends Do This...
Hey,
So, I often visit a fabulous site called eBaum's World. Today, it was brought to my attention a little nugget that I had previously missed.

Microsoft Urban Marketing + Oscar Comments
Microsoft may soon be forced to alter their company image soon to appeal to the urban hip-hop scene. After all everyone needs a word processor. This may look a little something like this.....

Probably not though, It would just end up more offensive that effective.
Funny none the less.
Oscars, Oscars, Oscars.......

What was up with the Oscars last night?

I understand rewarding Peter Jackson's full body of work in one night, but 11 awards is pushing it.
I have two competing theories on the results.

1) The adademy is comprised of either dorks, or people who are illiterate.

and

2) Any movie (or group of movies) with 1.2 billion dollars US in worldwide sales, deserves 11 awards, a la Titanic.

I'm leaning towards the second because money generally talks louder than fantasy literature fans.

Or maybe they were just good movies.............................NAH!!

The Oscars
Wow, I can't believe Pirates of the Caribbean didn't win a single Oscar...what a sham.

You can view the complete list of 'winners' here.
